Head Coach
Nick Garritano

Biography

COACHING EXPERIENCE:
10th season as head coach at GVHS.  11th season as a baseball coach here.  Won state championship in 2001 and 2003.  Named Sunrise Region Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2003.  Overall record 227-91 in nine years.

COACHING SPECIALTY(IES)
:
Head coach, infielders and hitting coach.

ANTICIPATED STRENGTHS WITHIN THESE POSITIONS
:
Our infield is very deep which gives us many different options.  We should be very deep within our lineup this season.  We should have much added power from last season and should also steal bases more often.

BIGGEST CHALLEGE WITH THESE POSITIONS
:
We have a couple of freshman that will contribute in the infield right away.  This season will be a learning experience for them.  Our biggest challenge as an offensive club will be to get our players to have team at bats.  There is no room for selfishness within our offensive philosophy.

REQUIREMENTS FROM PLAYERS IN THESE POSITIONS:
Hitters in our program need to put the team ahead of individual stats.  Our hitters are required to continuously move runners up to the next base, even if it means hitting a ground ball or long fly ball to the right side with a runner on second and less than two outs.  Our basic philosophy is to look for the pitch, middle/away, and react to the pitch that is inside.  Balance, staying inside the ball and hitting the ball where it is pitched are our basic fundamentals of hitting.  Infielders are required to be fundamentally sound and stay one step ahead of the game.  They must sacrifice their bodies to keep the ball in the infield and keep runners from advancing 90 extra feet.

GOALS FOR THE YEAR
:
My goal for this year’s club is to develop character, discipline, work ethic and desire in each of these young men.  Players should learn lessons that they can use beyond their days of playing baseball.  We would like to improve daily and be peaking at playoff time.  We would like to win the Southeast Division, Sunrise Region and ultimately the 4A Nevada State Championship.  We would also like to see that each one of our seniors get the opportunity to continue their education at a post secondary level.

MOST MEMORABLE BASEBALL EXPERIENCE:
Winning our first State Championship in 2001.

ADVICE TO DEPARTING SENIORS:
Never get complacent.  Always strive to better yourself as a person in the “real world.”  Never give up on your goals and make decisions that are going to make a positive impact on your life.

ADVICE TO INCOMING PLAYERS
:
Respect your elders, listen to your coaches and always play with passion and desire.  Always remember that “champions are not born, they are made.”
